If you have one week in Egypt, these are the bookings to make first. Everything else is bonus.
The Khufu (Great Pyramid), Khafre, and Menkaure pyramids on the Giza Plateau, plus the Sphinx. The only ancient wonder of the world still standing. Allow 3-4 hours minimum. Best 7-9am or after 3pm to avoid both heat and crowds.
Opened end of 2024 — the world's largest archaeological museum, housing the complete Tutankhamun collection (originally split, now reunited). Allow 4+ hours. Ticket €18-22 depending on add-ons.
Royal tombs of pharaohs including Ramses II, Seti I, Tutankhamun. Standard ticket gets you 3 tombs; Tutankhamun and Seti I are separate (worth the extra). Start at 6am for cooler conditions and shorter queues.
Largest religious building ever constructed. The Great Hypostyle Hall has 134 massive columns 21m high. Allow 2-3 hours. Sound-and-light show in evening — touristy but genuinely spectacular.
Better than Karnak for atmosphere. Open until 9-10pm, lit gorgeously. The Avenue of Sphinxes connecting it to Karnak reopened in 2021 — walkable for 3km between them.
Ramses II's monumental rock-cut temples (relocated stone-by-stone in the 1960s to save them from Lake Nasser). Day trip from Aswan — 3h drive each way or 45-min flight. Twice a year, sunlight illuminates the inner sanctuary — Feb 22 and Oct 22.
Cairo has 1,000 years of Islamic and Coptic history layered on top of the Pharaonic stuff. Most trips give it 2-3 days; honest answer is 4 if you have them.
Cairo's 14th-century market. Best at golden hour and after dark. Naguib Mahfouz café (in the Mahfouz lane) for traditional dinner. Haggle, don't pay first price.
Christian Egypt district with the 4th-century Hanging Church, Ben Ezra Synagogue, Roman fortress walls.
40 min south of Giza. The original pyramid (older than the Giza ones), recently re-opened tomb interiors with vivid paintings. Often the favorite stop for repeat visitors.
Hilltop medieval fortress with the iconic alabaster mosque. Best views of Cairo skyline.
Traditional wooden sailboat, 1-2 hour rides from Maadi or Garden City corniche. €15-25 for the boat. Bring a bottle of wine if you want.
2h day-trip from Cairo. Lakes, waterfalls, Whale Valley fossils (UNESCO), Coptic monasteries. Surprisingly green Egypt.
Egypt's other Egypt — turquoise water, intact reefs, year-round 21-28°C sea temperatures, and the only direct sun + diving combo within 4 flight hours of most of Europe.
Day trip from Hurghada. Coral reefs in 5-15m of water, turtles, reef sharks. SSI/PADI courses widely available. The Red Sea is genuinely top-3 diving in the world.
June-September — whale shark migration. Snorkeling encounters near Sataya/Dolphin reef.
Sunset 4x4 + camel + Bedouin dinner under stars. Touristy but well-executed.
Quieter alternatives to mass-resort Hurghada. Boutique hotels, less crowded reefs, kitesurf-friendly winds.
From Sharm El Sheikh — one of the world's best wall dives. Shark and barracuda action.
Both Hurghada and Sharm offer 4x4 + camel + Bedouin tent dinner. Touristy but enjoyable; private versions available.
The Egypt that most tour groups skip — desert oases, working monasteries, Mediterranean coast. Worth it if you have 10+ days or it's a second visit.
8h drive from Cairo near Libyan border. Salt lakes, Cleopatra's spring, Berber culture, mud-brick fortress. Permits required for some routes — book through licensed operator. The most "different" place in Egypt.
Surreal chalk formations sculpted by wind. Overnight desert camping under stars. 4x4 only, 6h from Cairo.
Mediterranean coast, 3h from Cairo. Roman ruins, Bibliotheca Alexandrina (the modern reincarnation), Stanley Bridge, seafood. Different vibe from Upper Egypt.
6th-century working monastery at the base of Mount Sinai (biblical Mount Horeb). Pre-dawn climb to summit for sunrise — popular but genuinely moving.
Bahariya Oasis base. Black volcanic rocks then surreal white chalk forms. 3-day camping circuit usually combined.
2024-2025 excavations have opened previously-restricted tombs with intact paintings. Premium access via private operator with antiquities-board contacts.
Saqqara newly-opened tombs, GEM full immersion, Egyptian Museum (old one) for context, Karnak with a real Egyptologist (not a flag-following guide), Abu Simbel.
Hot air balloon over Luxor at sunrise. White Desert overnight. Khan El Khalili at golden hour. Abu Simbel exterior morning light. Felucca with full sails on the Nile.
Ras Mohammed (Sharm), Brothers Islands liveaboard (advanced), Elphinstone, Daedalus, St. John's. June-Sep for warm-water diving; Sept for whale sharks.
Cooking class in Cairo (Coptic district), Khan El Khalili street food walk, Alexandria seafood evening, traditional koshary at Abou Tarek, Sufi tea on the Nile.
