Marsa Alam sits 270 km south of Hurghada, where the Red Sea coast becomes wild and undeveloped. The international airport (RMF) opened only in 2003, and the area has resisted overdevelopment — fewer than 30 hotels, mostly low-rise, separated by long stretches of empty desert coastline.
For travelers tired of crowds, Marsa Alam offers some of the best snorkeling and dolphin-spotting in Egypt. Sites like Sataya (Dolphin Reef), Abu Dabbab (sea turtles and dugongs), and Elphinstone are within easy boat reach.
The area is mostly all-inclusive resorts and small dive lodges. Nightlife is minimal — this is a destination for diving, snorkeling, mangrove walks, and reading on the beach.
Day-trips from Marsa Alam are limited compared to Hurghada — Luxor is 4h by car, Cairo too far. But the marine experience here is unmatched.
